FAQS
What others have wondered about trauma therapy
-
Trauma can be something big or small that has caused you pain in your life. It can be an experience that was life-threatening, violent, or terrifying such as sexual and physical assault, abuse, or death of a loved one. It can be the result of a relationship to a caregiver that was neglectful or emotionally absent. It can be the accumulation of years of discrimination because of your race, gender, sexuality, or culture. Trauma is not just about what happened to you–it’s about the feelings it left behind.
-
Sessions are centered on you and your needs. That means we talk about what’s meaningful to you and go at a pace that works for you. We integrate several methods, including education on how trauma impacts our brain and bodies, cognitive and emotional processing (Cognitive Processing Therapy), emotion regulation skill building, and trauma-sensitive mindfulness.
-
This will differ for every person. If you experienced a relatively “ok” childhood but experienced a single incident of trauma as an adult, trauma therapy can be quicker in terms of results. If you have experienced significant trauma(s) early on, and perhaps also as an adult, we will integrate several trauma-informed methods and thus the healing process may be a little slower.
Typically we’ll see you once a week at first, as that gives us a chance to connect and for you to feel seen and heard. Regardless, we’ll discuss what works best for you and your needs.
